    Monday, February 9th

This is Black History and CTE month.
Maggie L. Walker was a businesswoman and teacher. In 1883, Walker began working as a teacher, however her employment ended once she was married, in accordance with school policy against employing married women.  In 1903, she became both the first African American woman to charter a bank and the first African American woman to serve as a bank president. She founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank. The Penny Savings Bank not only attracted adults but Walker worked to appeal to children by passing out banks which encouraged them to save their money. While other banks collapsed during the Great Depression, St. Luke's Penny Savings Bank survived. Eventually, it consolidated with two other large banks and moved to downtown Richmond. It is still in operation today.

Have you thought about your finances? In CTE, Mr. Perkins teaches Entrepreneurship classes. In Social Studies, seniors are taking Economics and Personal Finance. Once you graduate and begin working, your goal should be to save at least 6 months' salary for life's unexpected circumstances.

  • Edulog is an app that lets parents view the location of their student's school bus to gauge arrival times each day. The app sends a push notification to the parent's smartphone when the bus enters a user-defined geographic area around the stop. Parents only receive access by registering with data unique to their child. It's all information to help parents feel secure about their child's trip on the school bus!
